Passenger vessel; Canoe, New Guinea Outrigger

Scale: Unknown. A full hull model of a sailing outrigger canoe from New Guinea. The double ended hull comprises of a lower section carved from a solid piece of wood to which is added two more planks above, secured by fibre stitching and made watertight with a natural filler and painted white. The solid outrigger float is secured to the hull by five circular timbers, each of which is lashed into an X-shaped crutch made from twelve smaller timbers. The whole outrigger and platform, made with ten flat planks, is then lashed to the main hull athwartships projecting slightly over the other side, using natural fibre lashings. The canoe is decorated with white topsides or bulwarks, with two sets of 6 white shells lashed on the bow and stern and various smaller parts painted a light brown, black and white with the lower hull and float left in a dark natural wood finish. There is a variety of loose equipment such as wooden a bailer, a stone anchor on fibre cable, and a bag of miscellaneous pieces the use and location of which is unknown.
