Passenger/cargo vessel; Brazilian coasting vessel

Scale: Unknown. Full hull model of a Brazilian coasting vessel rigged with masts and sails. The hull is built plank on frame and is of clinker construction up to the main wale and carvel above to the level of the deck. The lower hull, the upper bulwarks and cabin screens are painted a black gloss while above the wale is finished with a thin dark red stripe with a bright yellow band above. The bow is raking and has a double curve with a concave lower section and a convex curve upwards finishing above the deck with a pointed curved prow on the stemhead. There is a small planked foredeck finished in natural varnished wood with a curved step for the heel of the bowsprit and two circular holes one either side of a wooden fairlead, for the two foremasts. Either side of the step of the bowsprit are two vertical and curved wooden mooring posts which are painted a gloss black. Amidships is a clinker roof area over the cargo space, finished in natural varnished wood and edged in a dark red paint on its forward edge and the stanchion rails on either side. The pilot house is immediately aft of the cargo space, it is rectangular in shape tapering towards the stern and is fitted with a planked curved roof painted dark green. Both the forward and aft bulkheads are painted a bright yellow and are complete with three doors and one window. The aft deck is flat and rectangular in shape and finishes into the slightly raking and flat transom. The rudder comes up through the deck and is fitted with a metal tiller, and on either side is a pair of vertical and raking bollards with a curved top used for securing the sheet of the main gaff sail. The rig consists of three masts, the main is set amidships and goes through the cargo roof space and carries a single tall loose footed gaff sail. The main gaff sail is inscribed with the identification marks 'GI 250'. There are two foremasts, the larger of which is rigged with a tall loose footed gaff sail, the smaller mast is rigged with a rectangular lug sail, the tack of which is secured to the flat and tapering bowsprit. The model is mounted on its original wooden baseboard with four bun feet and a pair of wooden crutches. There is a paper label with the number '1' on it which refers to its inclusion in the 1913 Royal Naval Museum catalogue.
