Service vessel; Flower boat

Scale: Unknown. A model of a Chinese flower boat or hau ch'uan made entirely in wood and painted and varnished. The hull is made plank on frame and painted white below the waterline. The keel is extremely wide and the stern sweeps upward. There are extensions to the hull running the entire length of the vessel, the upper face of which is painted black with a red rail. The superstructure occupies the whole length of the model and is brightly painted and decorated. The superstructure walls consist of a number of decoratively carved and painted panels and doors, the carved panels, depicting flowers and the upper panels have been pierced. Four of the panels on the upper starboard three quarter are varnished wood on which has been painted Chinese characters. Double entry port doors on the port and starboard sides are painted green with red grilles above which is a stylized painted sun on an irregularly shaped cartouche. The square bow has an extension that protrudes over the bow. The front entry port consists of six panelled doors, all decorated with flowers. The upper deck is made of wide planks, stained and varnished a dark brown colour. There are two hatches or skylights, the foremost one is enclosed by a rail. On the port and starboard sides of the upper there are black painted railings. At the aft end the superstructure has two woven fibre roofs, the forward one being larger and open at the front. The aft fibre roof slopes downward at the stern and acts as an awning for an open gallery. The stern is flat, unpainted and the wooden surfaces have been varnished a dark brown colour. The port and starboard stern quarter sides are made up of varnished wooden panels. The rudder well accommodates a large fenestrated rudder. The model is equipped with a pair of wooden killicks with stocks close to their crowns. The model is displayed on two short rectangular black painted supports attached to a rectangular wooden base board with bevelled edges and grained to resemble walnut. The base board sits on four bun feet.
