Fishing vessel; Canoe, Oru

Scale: Unknown. A model of an outrigger sailing canoe oru made entirely in wood and stained a dark brown colour. The hull is steeply raked at the bow and stern, narrow and shallow draught. The bottom part of the hull is a dug out log which has been raised with side strakes fixed on shaped inserted frames and sewn to the hull. The hull ends are sharply raked for riding the surf. The two outrigger booms are each made from several pieces of timber and curved downwards. The outrigger float is roughly circular in section and is pointed at each end. The single mast is fixed in a forward position and rigged to the two outrigger booms. The gaff yard supports a rectangular sail. There are two pairs of stowage areas mounted to the bulwarks, fore and aft on the port and starboard sides of the hull, and the two starboard stowage areas contain paddles.
