Cargo vessel; Ghanja

Scale: Unknown. A model of a Ghanja or Arab dhow made entirely in wood with metal and organic material fittings. The hull is carved from a solid piece of teak and painted predominately white with a fine black line close to the waterline running the entire length of the hull. The transom stern is steeply raked with decoratively carved stern galleries from which emerge a pair of upward projecting davits. A small workboat is rigged to the davits facing to port with a white-painted hull, black bulwarks, and brown inboard. The stem post curves upward terminating in a large wheel-like decorative figurehead. A bowsprit is rigged to the starboard side of the figurehead. The main deck includes a six-spoke capstan, a foremast to which a furled lateen sail is rigged, and two large hatch covers, one fore the other aft of the foremast. The rear end of the bowsprit is rigged to the foot of the foremast. The upper deck includes a second six-spoke capstan, tiller with a metal disc attached to the end, and the mainmast rigged with a furled lateen sail. A large semi-circular appliance is attached by ropes to the starboard side of the hull. The model is displayed on a simple wooden baseboard with a pair of crutches and feet.
