Recreation vessel; Kolek, racing

Scale: Unknown. Model of a racing kolek from Singapore made entirely from wood and painted in realistic colours. The hull is green below the waterline with a red stripe above which runs the entire length of the hull. Above the waterline the wood is unpainted and varnished. The hull has been carved from a single piece of wood with the addition of decorative stem and stern pieces whose inboard faces have been painted with a green, red, and white chevron pattern. The interior of the hull is varnished and unpainted. The decorative gunwales amidships are pierced for attaching the outrigger sponson (missing) which can be rigged on either side of the hull. The model has a short bowsprit through which the stem post passes and which tapers inboard terminating at a point where it meets the single thwart. The thwart has a hole cut into it to accommodate the single mast. The model is rigged with a staysail and a large boomed spritsail, both made from fine white cotton sewn with bolt ropes. The outrigger has a yellow upper face and is painted green below the waterline with white and red stripes above which run the entire length of the outrigger. The model is displayed on a pair of decoratively shaped crutches attached to a lozenge shaped baseboard, all of which is painted blue. On a luggage label is '1959 TOUR SINGAPORE P69 TO THE PRINCE OF WALES FROM: THE YOUTH OF SINGAPORE 23 FEB 59'.
