Fishing vessel; Passenger Vessel; Donegal Curragh

Scale: 1:6. A full hull model of a Donegal paddling curragh, made using identical materials and techniques as the original vessel. The frame is made from hazel withies and covered with a tarred canvas skin. The framework consists of eleven lateral hoops set into holes in the underside of the gunwales. Upon these lateral hoops longitudinal withies are lashed in a criss-cross pattern . The lateral hoops are doubled on across the floor. The hull is straight sided with a round bow and a flat stern beyond which the gunwales extend. The gunwale is made up of five pieces and a straight transom beam. Each of the curved shoulder gunwales is in turn overlapped by the curved bow gunwale. The gunwales project slightly beyond the stern.

This model is based on a prototype in the Irish National Museum in Dublin. The projecting gunwales at the stern allowed it to be upended for drying without risk to the hide. Two men propel this type of craft: one kneeling in the bow to paddle ; the other sitting on the transom bar, using his paddle to steer over the stern.
