Merchant vessel; Pirate boat
Scale: Unknown. A carved hull model thought to be a Malay pirate boat of unknown type. The hull is carved from a solid piece of wood and the carving marks are clearly visible. The model is patinated a uniform dark brown colour with the rubbing strake and bulwark a darker brown. The hull shape is double-ended and the bottom is slightly flattened. The prow has precisely the same curvature as the stern. The top part of the bow (stern?) has been broken away and other damaged and there are other damaged and missing parts. The cabin positioned amidships has a pitched roof braced by three slender rods that support a woven fibre roof (acquired extensively damaged, now missing). The cabin sides consist of built-up bulwarks supported by three vertical posts on the port and starboard sides. A porthole or access door is placed forward. The stern (bow) terminates in a swept back decorative finial. Immediately forward of the finial is a pair of rounded projections jutting out from the hull. The model is equipped with what is thought to be a gangplank.
