Fishing vessel; Oru
Scale: Unknown. A model of a Sri Lankan outrigger oru canoe made entirely in wood with organic material fittings. The model is unpainted, the wood having a mid-brown patina. The hull is carved from a single piece of wood and built up on both sides with washstrakes that have been sewn to the hull. The bow and stern are steeply raked at an identical angle and consist of single rectangular wooden planks sewn to the ends of the built up sides. The washstrakes are capped with two long timbers, painted or stained black, running almost the entire length of the boat. Two outrigger booms which curve downwards are lashed to the bulwarks and rigged to the starboard side. Attached to the booms is an outrigger float with pointed ends, carved from a single piece of wood. Forward of the booms and lashed laterally across the bulwarks is a short wooden bar, square in section. The model is equipped with a mast, furled sail, and a pair of paddles with black painted handles which are lashed to a slender curved pole, also painted black.
