Cargo vessel; Fishing vessel; Junk, Foochow pole; Junk, fishing

Scale: Unknown. A model of a Chinese fishing junk or possibly a hua-p'i-ku or Foochow pole junk, made entirely in wood with metal and organic material fittings, painted in realistic colours. The hull is painted black with white, green, blue, and red decoration to the upperparts, and with an oculus on the port and starboard bows. The model has a bluff, flaring bow and is completely open at the front. The upper part of the stern is elaborately painted, while the lower part of the stern is hollowed out. The foremast is heavily raked forward with a set sail and horizontal stretchers. The mainmast is vertical, terminating in a lightning conductor or pennant staff. The large rudder is unpainted. Fittings on the main deck include three hatch covers inline, and a pair of anchors each with three stocks. The poop deck fittings include the mizzen mast which is positioned on the port side, tiller, lantern set on a tall pole, and a boom extending from the base of the mizzen mast. A pair of davits extend from the stern to which is rigged a small workboat. The model is displayed on a pair of decoratively shaped crutches, connected by a single piece of wood.
