Fishing vessel; Coracle; River Tywi coracle
Scale: 1:8. Model of a River Tywi coracle made entirely in wood and other organic materials. The model is made in exactly the same way as the vessel it depicts consisting of a sawn ash lathe frame with wicker gunwale covered with a tarred calico 'skin'. It is equipped with a paddle and a 'cnocer', a short club for stunning fish, which is held by two leather straps to the single transverse thwart. At either end of the thwart the gunwales form a pair of carrying handles.
In 1981 there were 14 licensed coracle fishermen on the Tywi, the largest concentration on any Welsh or English river.
