Passenger vessel; Canoe, outrigger
Scale: Unknown. A model of a Fijian thamakau or single outrigger canoe made entirely in wood with organic fibre fittings. The hull is carved from a single piece of red hardwood with inside left unfinished. The hull shape is deep and double-ended, with vertical stem and stern posts that extend above the solid fore and aft decks. The bulwarks are built up amidships using two washstrake planks which are stitched and tied to the port and starboard hull, and reinforced by dowels either side of them. Three substantial outrigger booms are rigged to one side of the hull and tied to notches cut into the bulwarks to receive them. Attached to the outrigger booms there is a large rectangular wooden platform which is positioned centrally over the hull and amidships. Abutting the platform is a wooden brace, square in section, tied off to the outrigger booms and there is a second brace tied off further along the booms. The large outrigger float is carved from a single piece of wood, is double-ended in shape and pointed at both ends. It is attached to the booms by six pairs of poles inserted into the float in v-shaped arrangements, and tied off to the outrigger booms. The model is equipped with a single paddle with a large spear-shaped blade.
