Passenger vessel; Canoe, outrigger
Scale: Unknown. Model of an outrigger canoe, made entirely of wood with organic material fittings. The hull is carved from a single piece of wood and the inside is unfinished. The tip of the bow is decorated with a carving that resembles an open mouth or beak. The fore and aft decks have wave deflectors. A pair of gunwales has been tied to the port and starboard hulls amidships. Between the gunwales and the hull is a thwart, two braces and three outrigger booms which are tied to both gunwales. The three outrigger booms are all flat in section and rigged to the starboard side of the hull. The booms are braced with two lengths of dowelling, one of which also has two forked posts at either end. The outrigger float is carved from a single piece of wood and is pointed at the aft end. The float is securely attached to the booms using pegs which have been tied to the booms themselves. The model is equipped with a pair of paddles with spear-shaped blades. On label attached to model "1959 tour. P.185 Gilbert & Ellis (sic) Is. colony. To the Duke of Edinburgh. From the people of Vaitupu. 30.3.59". Evidence of woodworm no longer active on the hull.
