Passenger/cargo vessel; Sambuk
Scale: Unknown. A model of an Arab sambuk made entirely in wood with metal and organic material fittings. The hull is made plank-on-frame with iron fixings to the hull, and a large shifting ballast box inside the hull amidships which is accessible through an opening in the deck. The hull is painted white below the waterline and is varnished wood above. The bow is steeply raked and the stemhead terminates in a point onto which is carved a decorative oculus. There is a short bowsprit whose end piece is forked on which the lateen yard from the foremast rests. On the main deck there are eight thole pins on the port and starboard sides, all bound with rope. The model has two masts, lateen rigged on both masts, the foremast being the larger of the two. Both lateen sails are in extremely poor condition and stored separately. Fittings include hatch covers, cooking pots, a hearth on four legs with a clay bed, and a steering wheel. The stern has been built up and sweeps slightly upward. A pair of stern davits project from the port and starboard stern quarters. The rudder is steeply raked, the lower half of which is painted off white and is detachable from the stern post. There are fourteen square bladed 'suff' type oars.
