Hunting vessel; Tena
Scale: about 1:10. A model of a traditional whale boat from Indonesia or Tena made entirely in wood with organic material fittings. The hull is carved from a single piece of wood and the outer hull has been inscribed to give the impression of jointed timbers. The hull shape is wide in the beam but shallow with almost vertical sides and a wide keel. The hull is unpainted apart from a triangular section at the bow painted white with a black and turquoise outline and on which is painted an oculus. The stempost extends above the gunwales and is triangular in section. A platform has been rigged over the bow which resembles a ladder and is made from four long planks of bamboo tied together and braced with three rectangular pieces of wood. The bipod mast leans towards the bow on which is rigged a lateen yard with a sail set which is rectangular in shape and made from 24 individual woven fibre squares. The bipod is rigged to the port and starboard sides of the vessel and a lateral brace is inset into the gunwales with notches at each end passing through the bottom part of each bipod yard. A pair of stout short outrigger booms extend from the port and starboard sides from the hull and attached to their ends is a single long piece of irregularly shaped dowel. The sternpost is very shallow and extends well beyond the hull and is triangular in section. Where the sternpost extends from the hull a decorative piece of carving has been placed and attached to it is a short steering oar. The model is equipped with a large number of rope coils to which is attached metal harpoons, 14 paddles, a round green painted pot with a wooden lid, a small woven basket, and a long length of bamboo with a button attached to one end. The equipment also includes a branch shaped totem, painted green with bamboo tassels and pink painted details.
