Passenger vessel; Canoe, Nyanza
Scale: Unknown. A model of a Nyanza canoe (Lake Victoria, East Africa) made entirely in wood which is unpainted and unvarnished. The hull consists of a dugout base with broad planks sewn onto it with raffia fibre, with large vertical stiches over lathes. The dugout base is extended into a ram-like projection that terminates in a vertical elbow piece, this 'false prow' is circular in section. The large beams which pierce the sides of the boat emerge as bosses and are used as thwarts. There are a total of six thwarts. A projection through the bow which is circular in section and tapers at the ends extend beyond the widest part of the boat. The model was originally equipped with paddles and a bailer but these are now missing.
