A maple framed woolwork picture of a 28-gun frigate circa 1850 under sail, in coloured wools in a garter belt in the centre. The ship is surrounded by flags of various nations, anticlockwise left to right: Great Britain, Austria, Norway, France, the White Ensign, the Russian naval ensign, Italy, Sweden, Netherlands and Great Britain. A Royal crown is placed above the oval. Two sprays of fuchsia, shamrock, rose and thistle surround the central motifs. The whole on a mauve ground enclosed by deeper purple curtains. The flag staves and curtains are ornamented with wool tassles.

This picture was worked by William Brookman (1856-1943) during his time aboard the training ship HMS 'Implacable'. It was apparently made as a 17th birthday present for his future wife. Brookman served in the navy from 1873-84. He trained on HMS 'Implacable, and was stationed in India on HMS 'Undaunted' and in the Persian Gulf in 'Ranger'. After leaving the navy, he joined the Metropolitan Police until 1911, then for three years was licensee of the Crown Hotel, Great Missenden.
