Woolwork picture

A woolwork embroidery. In the centre, the Union Flag is placed within a garter badge inscribed: 'LABOR OMNIA VINCIT' (the whole is intended as a shield of arms). The shield is placed on a foul anchor with the cable knotted onto the fluke; a crown on a cushion above, crossed blue and white ensigns behind. Two ratings act as supporters clad in summer and winter rig. Signed by the maker 'WW 1889' in embroidery. 'W. Witney 1889' is also inked on the top right corner.

William Witney was born in Fulham on 16 May 1867. He volunteered for ten years naval service on 6 May 1875, after two years training. He served on 14 ships including the flagship 'Duke of Wellington' before his discharge in 1885. He seems to have committed some quite serious offence while on HMS 'Mistletoe' and was gaoled for 42 days. In 1901 he volunteered for the Royal Fleet Reserve, re-enrolled in 1905 and was awarded a pension in 1912. The embroidery was made after Whitney had left the Navy and before he joined the Fleet Reserve.
