Embroidery depicting Merton Place
Embroidery depicting Merton Place, Surrey, the home Nelson shared with Emma and Sir William Hamilton, until the latter's death in 1803, and thereafter with Emma and his illegitimate daughter by her, Horatia. The embroidery has been done in a combination of silk, wool and brown hair on a cream silk satin ground. Some of the background has been hand-coloured and there is evidence, where the embroidery has come away, of the original ink drawing. It has been framed in an oval gilt wood frame.
