Dipping needle compass
This dry card compass has a brass bowl with a red painted metal piece on the base to add stability, a domed glass cover and is hung in gimbals. The lubber line inside the bowl is a single wire, with a brass band on the opposite side of bowl with vertical lines inscribed. The card is marked in points with north indicated by a fleur-de-lys. A metal rim on the card is marked degrees (0-90 in each quadrant). The card is marked 'POPE'S PATENT DIPPING NEEDLE COMPASS LONDON', although no patent has been identified. The compass needle, which can be seen through the centre of the card, is also a dipping needle with a vertical circular scale to measure the angle of dip (marked 0-90). Both south and north are inscribed on the needle. The compass also has a brass azimuth ring with two sights - one a vertical slit with a sliding filter; the other a vertical string and sliding sighting hole.
