Death of Nelson
This Stevengraph shows the 'Death of Nelson', after the painting by Daniel Maclise (1806-70) now in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, but itself a version of his even larger fresco in Barry's rebuilt House of Lords. The composition was also well-known from engraving. Stevengraphs, named after their developer Thomas Stevens, were jacquard-woven bookmarks, postcards, historical scenes and portraits produced throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stevens was the principal manufacturer but there were one or two others, W. H. Grant, also of Coventry, being the best known. This example is in its original card mount with the inscriptions 'Woven in Pure Silk', 'Death of Nelson' at the bottom. It is framed and glazed but the frame is probably mid-20th century.
