Silk picture

Embroidered picture of Nelson’s coffin and funeral car. The silk ground is embroidered with wool, silk and chenille threads using long and short stitch, satin stitch and couching. This image is probably based on one of the many prints of the funeral car, including those by Ackerman (PAG6709), Fores (PAF4369) or Dighton (PAD3939). The painted face, shoulders and bust of the figure of Victory indicate that this pattern was probably commercially available, and would have been purchased with the outline already drawn and the face painted-in. The embroiderer could then personalize it with additional elements or techniques.
