Playbill
Playbill from HMS 'Resolute'. Printed on red silk subsequently mounted on hardboard. It advertises a performance of 'Charles II' which took place during the Franklin Search Expedition, 1852-4. 'Resolute' (Captain Henry Kellett) was then off Melville Island, now in Nunavut, Canada. Inscription: 'THEATRE ROYAL, / MELVILLE ISLAND. / This well known place of amusement will, after a lapse of 32 years, / be re-opened to the public, on board / H.M.S. RESOLUTE / Captain Henry Kellett, C.B. / when the Committee of management, trust for a continuance of that patronage / so liberally bestowed on the former lessee. / The Entertainment for the season will commence on Tuesday the 23rd / November 1852; when the officers will perform the historical and much / admired comedy of CHARLES II. / Charles II ... Lt Mecham, / Rochester ... Dr Domville, / Edward, a royal page ... Lt. Pim, Capt Copp, F.J. Krabbé Esq, / Lady Clara - G.S. Nares Esq, / (Incognito niece of Rochester,) G.F. McDougall Esq. / After which the song of "Dick Turpin" (in character), and a Hornpipe, by Messrs Smith and Bainbridge, of H.M.S. Intrepid. / To conclude by the following of the Ship's Company sustaining the characters / in the laughable FARCE of / WHO SPEAKS FIRST: Mr Ernest Militant, Sergeant Hobbs R.M. / Mr. Charles, Mr. Blackwell.
