Dry card compass

Bowl-Brass with weight at bottom for stability. Lubber line is marked black on a strip of bone or ivory. Set in double brass gimbals and glass held in place by brass verge ring. Brass pivot locating stud at centre.
Card-Mica, covered with paper. Black card, markings in white graduated to 1/4 points. Decorated North and East points. Pivot arrangement at centre of card. Wax balancing blobs on underside of card.
Needle-Four edge bar needles supported by brass cross struts. Lengths 2 x 6.25" (15.6cm), 2 x 3.75" (9.5cm)
Pivot-Steel spike set in double brass gimbals secured to card. Pivot rests on brass stem holding jewelled cup set in double brass gimbals. Stem secured to base by screw.
