Valance

Beige coloured canvas valance embroidered in chain stitch in multi-coloured wools with allegorical figures and animals, including Hercules, Liberty, St George and the Dragon. It was made by Robert Jackson, a sailor on board HMS ‘Nonsuch’ in the Caribbean. Sailors often made objects like this to while away the time, or as souvenirs for their loved ones.

The edges are bound with red baize. It is embroidered with the following inscription: 'I Robert Jackson worked this on board His Majesty's ship the ‘Nonsuch’ in the West Indies in the Year of our Lord 1783', 'When this you see pray think of me. My Heart in true to none but thee'.
