Fabric square

A cambric square, cut round the edges to form a saw-tooth shape, finished in button hole stitch. Border of embroidered flower heads and leaves, the centres of the flowers worked in eyelet stitch. Different motifs worked in each corner - a windmill, stork and fox, donkey and lyre also the initials 'FHN'. Said to have been embroidered by Lady Frances Nelson, First Viscountess Nelson d. 1831. In fact a type of whitework embroidery made in and exported from India.
