Dress flounce

This embroidered panel is part of the border of a dress worn by Emma Hamilton at the fete of Palermo to commemorate Nelson's victory at the Nile. Three other pieces of this embroidery are known, another at Greenwich and two at the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth. The panel is decorated in coloured silks and gold thread and sequins, with oak leaves, acorns, anchors and coronets and the words ‘Nelson’ and ‘Bronte’, in reference to his new dukedom. In 1799 Ferdinand IV, King of Naples, in gratitude bestowed on Nelson the Sicilian duchy of Bronte. Nelson used the title and included Bronte in his signature, finally settling on the form ‘Nelson and Bronte’. After the death of his brother William, 1st Earl Nelson, the earldom and this dukedom were divided between different branches of the family. The Bronte estate descended through the Viscounts Bridport until 1981, when it was sold to the local authority, the Commune di Bronte.
