Straw coloured Chinese figured silk, worked in coloured silks. Framed. This material was used for Nelson's cot (also see TXT0115 and TXT0354). The background is Chinese silk, a luxury material which only the wealthy could afford. The design is of birds and plants, at this time Oriental design was very popular in Britain. The embroidered flowers and plants on this Chinese silk were said to have been made by Lady Hamilton, however, this is unlikely as the embroidery appears to be done by a professional. The hangings represent an interesting mixture of cultural influences.
