Canopy

A fragment of crimson damask material with acanthus leaf pattern. The item is accompanied by a letter to Baddeley from Austen Chamberlain and a compliments note to Miss Douglas. A manuscript with the item says it was '...a piece of the canopy that covered Nelson's body when it was brought to England'. Matches a piece in private hands said to be part of the red pall that covered the coffin during the funeral service in St Paul's Cathedral.

It was once owned by Admiral Douglas, Controller of the Navy. Another piece of the same material, also said to be from Nelson’s pall, is in private possession. The fragments are likely to be part of the pall thrown over the coffin when it lay on the bier in St Paul’s Cathedral. Fairburn’s edition of ‘The Funeral of Lord Nelson’ (1806) refers to it: ‘As soon as the body was received on the bier, a red pall was thrown over it, and a state black canopy, decorated with the crests and different coronets of the deceased in gold and surmounted with black plumes, was conveyed down the steps and given to six rear-admirals, who bore it over the coffin, under which the flag officers supported the pall.’
