This dress waistcoat of a captain, under three years seniority, feature long sleeves which at the time were considered to be old fashioned. The front and front skirts of the waistcoat are edged with gold lace, as are the cuffs. The three-pointed pocket flap is both edged and outlined with gold lace. Under each of the three points is a domed button made of wood faced with brass. The Royal Naval uniform regulations of 1748-67 stipulated that flag officers, captains, commanders and lieutenants were to have a 'Dress Sute' and a 'Frock' for undress. Midshipman were given only a frock.
