Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1831
Full dress trousers of a Captain. Blue wool trousers with gold lace along the outside seam of each leg. The bottom of each leg has a gusset, in the front of the trouse, lined with black silk twill. This is so that the trouser will fit snugly over the boot. The boot strap, which runs under the instep, is of blue wool lined with glazed brown linen. The boot strap is detachable and fastens to the trousers with two metal buttons that have been painted black. The bottom of the trousers have been turned and hemmed.
The waistband features two horn or wood buttons on each side of the front and one each on the back, this is probably for braces. The waistband itself is lined with cream linen and has a linen gusset at the back with eyelets and linen tape to adjust the fit. On the front is a fob pocket. The flap front has four buttonholes, two for self-covered buttons and two for wood or horn buttons. The placquet is faced with brown glazed linen. Pocket bag is of white linen.
