Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1833

Full dress coat of a captain. The coat is of blue face cloth, double-breasted with 10 gilt brass buttons in two rows. It has a stand up collar, faced with red wood and edged with distinction lace. The collar is lined with blue wool and has been interlined with leather and heavy felted wool, which has been fixed by three horizontal rows of running stitch, for added stiffness. On the top of each shoulder are four eyelet holes for epaulettes, two are quite high up and actually go through the collar. The tops of the sleeves are puffed, and the sleeve terminates is a slashed cuff. The slash is blue edged with gold lace and has three small gilt brass buttons. The cuff is of red wool edged with gold lace. The sleeves are lined with white linen and at the cuff, the lining is of black silk twill. The back of the coat features two gilt brass hip buttons and, on either side, two three-point faux pocket flaps edged with gold lace. Each flap has a gilt brass button under each point. The tails have sword pleats which conceal the pocket. The pocket bags are of white linen The central back vent of the tails overlaps slightly and in turn causes the tails to overlap. There is a gilt brass button at the bottom of each of the sword pleats, and the tails are lined with white wool. There should be an additional button at the centre of the sword pleats, but this is now missing from both sides and the hole for the shank has been sewn closed.
On the inside of the coat, the yoke has been interlined with doctor's flannel, covered with blue wool and quilted into place, the yoke itself has pinked edges. The chest is interlined, probably with the same fabric as the yoke and also covered with blue wool that has been quilted into place as well. All the edges have been left unfinished with the exception of the skirts, collar and cuffs which are turned and hemmed.
