Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1833
Double-breasted waistcoat of a lieutenant of blue wool with stand-up collar, worn by Lieutenant Horatio James (died 1850), later Commander. The waistcoat fastens with two rows of ten small gilt brass buttons. The waistcoat was to be worn with all buttons fastened as is evident since the buttonholes are finished on one side only. There are two long, shallow pockets in the front lined with brown linen. The inside of the waistcoat is lined with a beige cotton twill fabric. The stand-up collar is lined with blue wool and bears traces of dirt. At the back of the waistcoat are four linen tapes for adjustment.
