Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1833

White linen trousers. The trousers have a deep waistband lined with white cotton and a featuring a fob pocket. There are four metal buttons at the top edge (two on each side of the central front opening). There are also two metal buttons at the back, along the top edge on either side of the inverted V gusset. The back gusset has four eyelets, two on either side, with a small tab of printed pink cotton (used to pull the gusset up, past the adjustment tapes that are no longer there). The trousers have a central front opening with four metal buttons. This is concealed by a narrow front flap which fastens at the outer corners with two metal buttons. The bottom seams of the flap have been edged with running stitch in a geometric motif. There are also two front pockets which fasten with metal buttons. H. James is stamped in ink once on the outside of the waistband and in two places inside -- at the front and back. The bottom of the trousers have black elastic bands that have openings every few milimeters, at regular intervals. These worked as buttonholes -- in this way a length of elastic could be cut and as it lost its elasticity, it could be stretched to the next buttonhole. On the outsdie seam at the bottom of each trouser leg is an opening. This would allow room for the boot. On the inside hem of each leg are two metal buttons to secure the elastic strap.
