Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1843
Cocked hat in its original metal box belonging to Captain William Hans Blake (died 1874). The hat is of beaver felt, and, in keeping with the regulations of 1843 for the rank of captain, its edges are bound in black silk woven with an acorn and oak leaf pattern. There are two loops of gold bullion, the centre one twisted, which also indicate rank. The loops fasten over a domed gilt brass button with the insignia of a crown over a fouled anchor. At both ends of the hat are tassels of gold bullion with blue purl over a wood core. The hat is lined with cream silk with the maker’s stamp: ‘J. ADAMS & SON/LATE/BATTEN & ADAMS/DEVONPORT.’
