Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1843

Full dress coat worn by Captain Thomas Lamb Polden Laugharne (1786-1863). The changes to the regulations in 1843 are clear with the white mariner’s cuff and horizontal stripe of distinction lace on the sleeve. This coat also reflect changes in fashion, as the tails are slightly shorter and have more of a square cut instead of the longer tapering tails of 1827. In addition, the shoulders do not feature the full gathers seen in 1827, instead the sleeves are of a fuller, looser cut and are not tapered.

Rank is indicated by the width of lace on the collar and cuffs and by the two rows of ten buttons.
