Royal Marines Light Infantry uniform: pattern 1856-63

Single-breasted tunic of red felted wool, fastening with eight domed buttons with Royal Marines’ insignia. The coat has a small standing collar faced with blue wool, edged with gold lace and featuring the crown and star insignia on both sides. The front is edged with white piping. On the left shoulder is a cord shoulder strap. The sleeves terminate in a non-working mariner’s cuff that features a blue slash, edged in white piping. There are three buttons on the mariner’s cuff and the faux buttonholes are outlined with gold lace. The coat has extremely short skirts, and the non-working sword pleats feature the slash of the mariner’s cuff with three domed buttons, with the buttonholes edged with gold lace.

The chest is heavily padded and quilted to create a rounded effect. The tunic is lined in cream silk twill, with the exception of the skirts, which are lined in cream felted wool.

This coat belonged to Edward Fitzgerald Pritchard, who was made a 2nd lieutenant in the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1848. He became a 1st lieutenant in 1852, and a captain in 1859. He drowned in 1864 while serving on HMS ‘Orlando’.
