Royal Marines Light Infantry uniform: pattern 1861-69

Hat belonging to Captain E.F. Pritchard of the Royal Marines Light Infantry. The hat is made of black beaver felt over leather. The visor is of textured black leather and the hat is edged with a narrow band of black patent leather. On the front is a badge of brass and base metal of: crown above a fouled anchor above a sunburst over which is a wreath of laurel leaves encircling a garter with the inscription 'PER MARE PER TERRAM' which encircles the globe. From the laurel hangs a pendant horn. The top of the hat is covered with black patent leather and on the base at the top in the back is a medusa head of base metal.

The underside of the visor is lined with green leather. The interior of the hat has a deep hatband of brown leather. The hat is lined with red glazed fabric with the crown lined with red silk which has been quilted with running stitch in a floral pattern.

The chin strap is of black patent leather fixed on the right side just below the visor. Behind the badge on the exterior of the hat is a metal sheath for the shako plate.

The hat can be worn with a plume of dyed greed horsehair or with a worcested, tufted ball.

Pritchard would have worn this hat between 1861 and his death in 1864.
