Royal Naval Artillery Reserve uniform: pattern 1873

Rating frock for Royal Naval Artillery Reserve (RNAR) of white cotton drill.
The collar is faced with blue jean with three rows of wavy stripes in white cotton tape. The full sleeves terminate in a cuff faced with blue jean with three wavy rows of white cotton tape. On each cuff there is a button hole and tin button. There are two cotton tying pates at the base of the collar. The interior of the frock features a plaket of blue jean and interior breast pocket on the left side. The bottom of the frock is turned and hemmed, as are the side seams. At the inner back base of the collar is the laundry mark stitched in blue thread.

The Royal Naval Artillery Reserve or Volunteers as they were initially known, were established in 1873 and were recruited from either keen amateur sailors or those who were in the merchant service. The ratings uniform the RNAR was the same at that worn by the Royal Navy with the exception of the lines of tape on collars and cuffs which were wavy instead of straight.
