Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1879

Boat cloak belonging to Sir Francis Leopold McClintock (1819-1907). The cloak is of blue wool, single breasted with four gilt brass buttons as worn by a flag officer. Rounded turn down collar with brass hook and eye fastening. The front panels of the interior of the cloak are lined with a white linen/wool twill. The back panels are lined with a silk/wool twill.

McClintock entered the navy in 1831. After early service on the South America Station and in the Pacific, he joined 'Enterprise' under Captain James Clerk Ross, on a search expedition for Franklin's ships 'Erebus' and 'Terror' missing since 1845. During three Arctic voyages, McClintock pioneered improved techniques of sledge travel making several long journeys overland. Lady Franklin appointed him to command the yacht 'Fox' on an expedition financed partly at her own expense. McClintock was able to confirm Inuit reports relayed by Dr John Rae, that the Franklin expedition had abandoned ship and perished on the shores of King William Island while trying to travel south to safety. For this achievement McClintock was knighted in 1860.

From February 1861 to December 1862 McClintock commanded the 'Doris' in the Mediterranean and was stationed in 'Aurora' in the North Sea during the Danish war of 1864 where he prevented a serious internationl incident. After three years as commodore in charge of Jamaica, he reached flag rank in 1871. From April 1871 to May 1877 he served as admiral superintendant of Portsmouth Dockyard. He saw his last actve service as commander-in-chief on the North America and West Indies station 1879-82 and was promoted to the rank of admiral before reaching retirement age. McClintock was elected an elder brother of Trinity House in February 1884.
