Royal Naval Artillery Volunteers uniform: pattern 1887

Frock coat of blue wool belonging to Lieutenant Crowley, Royal Naval Artillery Volunteers. The coat is double-breasted with five gilt brass buttons with RNAV insignia. Turn down collar, the sleeves have a smooth shoulder, rather than a gathered one as seen in mid-century. The sleeve terminates in a stylized round cuff with three RNAV buttons with blue twist buttonholes. There is one row of wavy lace above the buttons. Above this is another row of wavy lace in the shape of a six-point star. The lining of the coat is of black cotton/silk sateen and is quilted under the arms. The shoulders are full lined with white cotton and the chest is lined with blue wool. The back of the coat features two hip buttons and a brass clip at the waist. The pocket bags are of cotton twill.

The Royal Naval Artillery Reserve or Volunteers as they were initially known, were established in 1873 and were recruited from either keen amateur sailors or those who were in the merchant service.
