Cap, Bedouin Steam Navigation Company
Blue peaked wool cap of Bedouin Steam Navigation Company. Blue wool cap band with foliate scroll pattern and scalloped edge. Worn on top of this is a blue wool cap band with three gold lace stripes to indicate rank. Attached to the top band is a cap badge that contains a red swallowtail flag of applied ribbed silk fabric embroidered with a white cross overall and a blue shield in the centre of the cross, both of twisted silk thread. The letters ‘B S N Co’ are divided between the quadrants of the flag and the letter ‘T’ is enclosed within the shield, all in metal purl. Applied coiled metal outlines the flag, cross and shield. The flag is surrounded by laurel leaves of gold purl with stems of applied coiled gold metal.
The cap’s visor is made of card faced with black patent leather (green on the under side) with black leather binding on the edge of the visor.
On the interior of the cap there is a black leather hat band and red silk lining with the maker’s details stamped in gold ‘DAVIES & SMITH / MERCANTILE OUTFITTERS / 130, 131, 140, 141 BUTEDOCK / CARDIFF AND AT 19, 20 STATION ROAD BARRY’.
