Royal Air Force marching compass Mk I.
This compass has a plastic case and closely follows the design of the German instrument (No. 2503) though it is larger, being 21/2” square. The lid carries a mirror and a sighting slit with a luminous line below it and operates the needle lifter.
The course setting ring is graduated by 5° to 360° and has luminous spots at 005° and 335°. The figures are very small.
The needle is eddy-current damaged and is luminous at the North end.

Bowl: Black plastic with hinged lid. Lid contains metal mirror with slit hole sight. The bowl carries the graduations 0 - 360 in degree markings and NSEW. The whole bowl can be turned. The lubber mark, an arrow, the North point, two circles and the North end of the needle are all marked with luminous paint. There is a thumbing and a stop lever.
Needle: The needle is black with North end marked with luminous paint. Length 1.25" (3.1cm)
Pivot: Unsighted.
