Liquid compass

Bowl: A glass bowl held between a brass plate at the top and at the bottom. The bowl is mounted in double vertical gimbals, one fore and aft and the other athwartships, this one being operated by two rollers. Two heavy brass weights are at the base of the gimbals.
Card: A vertical metal card with black markings gradusted on the top and side to points.
Needle: Unsighted.
Pivot: An inverted pivot spike rests in the pivot cap. There is also an upright spindle which goes to the top of the upper plate to stop the card falling off.
