Liquid compass and binnacle

Liquid compass and binnacle. The key for the compass is marked ACO0141.1

Bowl: Dia. 9.75" (24.8cm) Black painted brass, two filler plugs at side, expansion chamber at base. Base of bowl fitted with a heavy balancing weight. Inside of bowl painted white with a black wire lubber pointer projecting from side. Mounted in a black painted brass gimbal ring 12.0" (30.5cm) dia. attached to binnacle. Bowl fitted with an azimuth circle carrying a magnifying prism, dark glass reflector, and two dark shades.
Card: Dia. 6.5" (16.5cm) White painted mica with black markings, graduated to 1/4 points and quadrantally in degrees. Attached by a light framework to float at centre.
Needle: Two edge bar magnets 4.0" (10.2cm) long are mounted either side of float below card.
Pivot: Unsighted.
Binnacle: Solid pillar type. Dia of base 14.0" (35.5cm), Dia at centre 10.0" (25.4cm), Dia at top 14.0" (35.5cm). Fitted with sphere brackets (spheres missing) and four vertical brass doors with locks which give access to fore-and-aft and athwartship corrector magnet racks. A bucket is fitted containing the vertical corrector magnets. Hood consists of a heavy brass ring on which is mounted a six sided glass pyramid with a circular aperture at the top, which is covered by a brass disc. Over the hood a brass screen is fitted which has a 'Bell' shaped aperture in its side.
