Liquid compass

Bowl: Black painted brass, two expansion chambers and two filler plugs at the side, and semi-spherical glass bottom partly filled with oil. Inside of bowl painted white, with black lubber pointer extending from side of bowl to edge of card. The bevelled-edge verge glass has a glass boss and pin fitted at the centre for use with a deflector. Black painted brass verge ring is fitted with a removable counterpoise, and two fixing bolts on the opposite side to acommodate a magnifier (missing). Bowl is fitted in a heavy black painted brass gimbal mounting 11.5" (29.2cm) in diameter, in a fore and aft direction.
Card: 6.5" (16.5cm) diameter mica, painted white with black and red markings, graduated to 1/4 points and quadrantally in degrees. The inner ring of graduation figures are painted red, and the outer reversed figures are painted black. Decorated N point incorporating makers name. Card is attached to domed, white painted float at centre.
Needle: Unsighted.
Pivot: Unsighted.
In fitted oak box 12.5" x 12.5" x 12.25" (31.2 x 31.2 x 30.8 cm) containing one spanner, two expansion nuts, and spare counterpoise.
