Liquid overhead compass and binnacle
From ACO catalogue: "An overhead compass. This was the standard compass of the trawler "Frobisher" (renamed 'Fastnet') when she was purchased by the Admiralty in 1932. It is of some interest as showing how far the equipment of such vessels were behind those of the Royal Navy even at this date."
Bowl: Dia 10.5" (26.6 cm) Grey painted brass, filler plug at side, expansion chamber at base incorporated with glazed bottom. Inside of bowl painted white (dirty) with a black lubber line painted on side. Mounted in grey painted brass gimbal ring 11.75" (29.8 cm) dia.
Card: Dia 8.75" (22.2 cm) White painted mica with black markings, graduated to 32 points and to 1/4 points. Attached to a white painted float at centre.
Needle: Two 6" (15.2 cm) needles of circular section mounted below card.
Pivot: Unsighted.
Binnacle: Dia of top 14" (35.5 cm) Grey painted brass with grey painted brass fittings. Fitted with sphere brackets and spheres; A mounting tube for Flinders Bar 24.5" (62.2 cm) long; A vertical magnet is held in a clamp below the compass and three boxes are provided for the horizontal magnets. The boxes are divided into compartments by corrugated plates so that the height of the magnets can be adjusted.
Hood: Grey painted brass with a lamp bracket at the side which has been adapted to carry an electric lamp.
