Master's black wool peaked cap of British India Steam Navigation Company with white cotton cap cover.
Black wool cap badge with Britannia depicted standing, facing left, in front of a lion. Britannia and the lion are both embroidered with gold purl and silk thread work. Gold bullion has been used for the lion’s mane and paws. Britannia is carrying a shield with the Union Flag in polychrome silk thread work and a trident of gold coil. Applied coiled metal also outlines the shield. Britannia and the lion are surrounded by laurel leaves of gold purl with stems of gold coil.
The cap’s visor is made of card faced with black wool (green leather on the under side) with gold embroidered oak leaves to indicate rank and black leather binding on the edge of the visor. The black leather strap across the visor is fixed with a button to either side of the cap.
On the interior of the cap there is a brown leather hat band and black silk lining with the maker’s details in white on a black rayon label ‘GLEN & POWELL LTD & MC CARTER (FORMERLY OF MILLER & SON) / 18A LONDON ST EC3 / & AT TILBURY DOCKS / TEL. CENTRAL 13170
