Boat's liquid compass and binnacle

Boat's liquid compass. Patt 20. No. 43551.

Bowl: A brass bowl painted black with a heavy weight at the bottom and filler plug at the side. The inside of the verge is painted white and on this there is a black lubber line.

Card: A mica card white with black markings graduated to half points.

Needle: Unsighted.

Pivot: Unsighted.

Binnacle: Generally similar to the 202 model but has a circular window on the top for taking rough bearings and this is provided with a metal cover. There are two alternative positions for the candle lamp provided, one on either side of the binnacle, and a stowing position is provided on the fore side. Two lashing rings are fitted on the sides and a door gives access to the bowl recess, inside which is the device for locking the bowl, also a tube to carry a spare candle. The lamp was originally fitted with a candle socket which engaged in the bottom of the former by means of a bayonet joint.
