Royal Marines uniform: pattern 1827
Rectangular shoulder belt-plate of gilt brass. There is a central motif of a crowned lion statant guardant above a crown, above a scroll with the inscription ‘GIBRALTAR’ bordered by husk flowers. Below is another scroll with the inscription ‘PER MARE PER TERRAM’ (the Royal Marines’ motto, ‘By Sea, By Land’), also bordered by husk flowers. All three applied elements are secured to the belt plate by means of small wire eyes that fasten into the plate and are secured to the back by wire pins. In this way, they could easily be removed for re-gilding and cleaning.
